I’m often asked, “What does it take to become a Senior Developer?” Typically, I think of technical readiness, experience leading projects, and involvement in the wider tech community, among other factors.
As a side coach (not their people manager), I’ve offered guidance to developers aiming for senior roles. While many have successfully transitioned, some have struggled to make the leap.
Those who haven’t yet reached the senior level often express concerns. Some feel their managers aren’t recognizing their contributions fairly, while others feel stuck in their current roles. Through these conversations, I’ve noticed common themes indicating they might not be ready for a Senior Developer role.
